ABOUT THE ARTIST
Gerri Rachins (b. 1955, Brookline, Massachusetts) is an American artist who lives and works in Boston and on Cape Cod. For more than four decades, her abstract paintings and drawings have explored relationships between structure and spontaneity, control and chance, and form and formlessness. Working primarily on paper, she combines fluid acrylic inks, Flashe vinyl paint, gouache, and drawing materials to investigate uncertainty, perception, and spatial ambiguity.
Rachins studied at the New York Studio School, received her BFA from the Philadelphia College of Art, and earned her MFA from Massachusetts College of Art in 2001. She taught for more than twenty years at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and thirteen years at Massachusetts College of Art and Design.
Her work is held in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Addison Gallery of American Art; Zillman Art Museum; and Danforth Art Museum. A member of The Painting Center in New York, she has presented several solo exhibitions, including The In-Between (2020), Almost Everything Is Going Well (2022), and Getting From One Place to Another (2025). Mobilia Gallery in Cambridge, Massachusetts, presented a twenty-year retrospective of her work in 2022.
In 2026, the Zillman Art Museum at the University of Maine presented Gerri Rachins: Selected Works on Paper, 2008–2025, a solo exhibition surveying seventeen years of her artistic practice.
