I am pleased to let you know that I am having a solo exhibition of new works on paper from my ongoing series "In-Between" at The Painting Center in Chelsea, NY, from October 27th to November 21st, with an Opening Reception on Thursday October 29th from 5 PM to 8 PM and a Closing Reception on November 21st from 3 PM to 5 PM.

It has been a challenging journey to have this show at this time, while the threat of Covid 19 still looms large. During the initial lockdown, the workflow in my studio stopped. From home, I watched television, listened to the radio, and read the newspapers, while I worried about my family, friends, colleagues, students and the rest of the world.

Questioning the meaning of my artistic practice, I began to read the words of other artists. Of the numerous books and periodicals that I read; “Notes from the Woodshed” by Jack Whitten became a standout. Perhaps because the last show that I saw prior to Covid-19 was the Hauser & Wirth show “Jack Whitten. Transitional Space. A Drawing Survey.” Whitten’s passion to explore the materiality of media inspired me.

When I finally got back into the studio, I was filled with energy to create. However, when I attempted to work, color had lost meaning to me. I could only use blacks, whites and grays. In the earlier works on paper from the series "In-Between", graphite was the dominant medium. As I imagined the different states that a hue could be in, color became the driving force in the new works from this series, with a renewed sense about the use of paint as a material. The contrast between the flatness of Flashe combined with the unique characteristics of acrylic paint, (especially the acrylics embedded with mica), enabled me to create visually dynamic works that require active participation from the viewer.

I hope you will have an opportunity to view the work in person as it is meant to be experienced.
